NELIOTA paper receives prestigious prize from the Academy of Athens
The paper “NELIOTA: New results and updated statistics after 6.5 years of lunar impact flashes monitoring” (Liakos et al., 2024, A&A, 687, 14) was awarded the 2025 Prize in Memory of Academician Ioannis N. Xanthakis by the Academy of Athens on December 18, in the field of Astronomy, Astrophysics, and Space Sciences.
Interactive Map of Lunar Impact Flashes
The NELIOTA website now features an interactive lunar map displaying all validated impact flashes detected with the 1.2 m Kryoneri telescope. Built with the Aladin Lite sky atlas, it allows users to explore the exact locations of observed impact flashes on the Moon. This visualization was created by Hadrien Devillepoix to make NELIOTA’s verified impact flashes accessible and visually engaging.
First lunar impact flash detection of the NELIOTA-III campaign
We announce the first validated lunar impact flash detection during the first night of operations (17/8/2025) of the new 3-yr observing campaign. Due to the relatively high illumination phase of the Moon (~0.4) the flash was recorded in only two successive images in the I-band and marginally in one in R-band. Details are given here.
